Pre war Gibson banjo resonator from a late 20s TB-2. Fits 11' banjo rims. Works with either a two piece or one piece Gibson banjo flange.vintage or modern.
Single bound with the classic brown coloration. Original small style resonator lugs and thumbscrews have been replaced with modern larger style thumbscrews and lugs. 4th lug added for Mastertone style banjo installation. Nice vintage patina but fully usable.no warpage.
Gibson TB-2 # 824-10. The style 2 of the 1930s was the highest-priced non-Mastertone model, selling for $75 when the entry-level Mastertone, style 3, was $100.Lot #824 (see Gibson banjo serial numbers vs. Factory order numbers) is one of the last documented batches of style 2 banjos, and for unknown reasons the banjos from this lot feature the forty-hole archtop tone ring normally reserved for.
Original tenor neck cutout has not been altered. Very nice shape for its age and perfect for the restoration of your Pre War Gibson missing it's resonator. Local pickup is always welcomed. Shipping is done with excellent care in packing. Soon to be available. I have here a wonderful Grover Pre War 2 Hump Tailpiece that is engraved with the Bella Voce engraving pattern for sale. The Nickel plated tailpiece is in wonderful condition as can be seen from the pictures. I bought this thinking that I was going to try it on my Pre War Top Tension banjo but have decided to play it with the original tailpiece on it.
The tailpiece is all original except for the adjusting thumbscrew that adjusts the height of the tailpiece. The one on it is a reproduction one and not a pre war one. The tailpiece had a 3rd.
String hole drilled in it many years ago to be used on a 5 String Banjo. You can see this in the pictures. Method of payment preferred is Paypal as it is the safest method of payments for both the buyer and the seller. Shipping will be $30.00 flat rate for locations within the Continental U.S. Please feel free to contact me about the tailpiece. Thanks again. The Trujo Style C.
Frequently called'The Golden Eagle, is an extremely rare banjo. The Style C is the top of the line for the Trujo Banjo Company.
The Trujo banjo is a deep banjo with an extraordinary sound presence. It was frequently used for recording purposes because of its ability to'cut through' the other band instruments. The Style C neck is made of solid ebony with a'flowing ribbon' carved into the heel.
The peg head is hand carved with the face and breast of an eagle with its wings forming the outline of the peg head's shape. The resonator is of ebony and has a large golden eagle in bas-relief carving.
The Style C cost $500! Comes with original case. Some original tools, a spare mute, and some vintage strings. Hardware, and skin head are all original. The gold plating is in excellent. Condition, just needs to be cleaned.
The quality of plating, inlays, engraving, wood carving, and finish work is comparable to a Gibson Bella Voce or Florentine. Only three others have surfaced and sold in the last thirty years. The first to Akira Tsumura in the 1980's for $18.000. The American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City purchased one after that for an undisclosed amount.
The third was sold by Banjo Hall of Fame's, David Frey in 2012 for $7,500. It is likely that you will not see another one for sale any time soon. Up for a buy it now or best offer is one super cool and very rare 1920s(just a guess) Wm Schmick Lyric 6 string guitar banjo. With its original hard case, case key, and some old strings and metal fingerpick, all in excellent condition.
These are very rare and most sources say they were made by Vega, and predate Vegas own Vegavox version. The instrument is in beautiful vintage condition, and sounds and plays excellent with no issues at all. The frets are original and in great condition, though they were lifting at their edges, they were pulled, reseated, leveled and polished, so it plays perfect. I do not think a screw was ever turned on this, and I did not take it apart or mess with it, other than the frets. The case looks like it could very well fit a Gibson 5 string Mastertone, the interior dimensions are 13w, 37.5' long and 3.5'. Deep including lid space, so not 100% sure on that, but if it does, that would be a HUGE bonus!
Shipping will always be combined when possible! Shipping will vary depending on where you live from 45.00 close to NY up to 75.00 on the west coast.

Serial/FON# 8120-20. This instrument was sold a few years back at Mandolin Brothers to a party in California. Where it was converted to 5 String. The 5 string neck appears as one of the MOST PROFESSIONAL looking conversion necks I've ever seen having a heel fit that hugs the rim and clears the tube and plate flange with one of the'tightest' fittings I've seen on these two piece flange banjos from any era. It was built by GRYPHON musical instruments and it appears in the quality of construction as the only other neck I've seen from this HIGHLY RESPECTED vintage instrument outfit based in Palo Alto CA. The frets are in ridiculously great condition showing very little useage.
The fingerboard. Binding, fret work and inlay are of a quality that EASILY equals or exceeds what Gibson could themselves provide. The highly figured maple is something found on generally the most exquisite of instruments. I received this banjo with the original spring loaded/ floating tonering(a product so bad Gibson abandoned the idea after a short year and half of production) and promptly replaced this part with a custom machined HUBER CONVERSION TONERING. With the HUBER tonering installed and a proper setup the banjo now sweetly sings with great volume.
Tone and ring up the neck.something a HU. Don't mess around and don't wait. You may never see a Gibson UB-1 Banjo Uke in as great condition as this one. Somewhere around 90-100 years old. No sign of refinishing or repair.
Please study the photos. This is in FABULOUS condition.
I am not an expert. But it looks all original except the bridge and(of course) the strings.
I don't know about the tailpiece and head. Please use your own judgment. GREAT SOUND, works well with a fiddle, and can be well-mannered if need be. Strung with Aquila Nylgut strings(one is wound) Comes with case and tightening key(perhaps not original. But correct era) Don't like my price?
Make an offer! I may post a video later.
But this will probably sell within hours, and I know that you will be blown away when you open up the case and put this little baby in your hands. This is the sweetest little banjo uke that there ever was. Ships fully insured. Read my impeccable feedback and bid with confidence. I am a great packer. I will be listing a J.B.
Schall 5 string banjo from my family as well soon. Thanks for looking. Up for bid is a vintage Gibson trapdoor banjo. I am not a banjo player so please view all photos closely and as any questions before bidding to make sure this is the item you want. This banjo has been in my family since it was purchased new here in Kalamazoo in the 1920's.
The banjo is fresh from the closet. The banjo is in original condition with original finish and parts.
There is a small area near the trapdoor were the veneer is missing this measures aprox. 1' x 3/8' The overall finish is worn with crackle and grime. The banjo has never been cleaned and I only dusted it for photos. The entire banjo is built like a rock and all parts are tight and solid. The fingerboard is in fine shape with little playing wear and all inlays are. All other hardware appears intact and original and functional.
It does have a new bridge. The original Gibson label is in fine shape on the interior. It is numbered on the interior 11111A-41. This has a solid family history but it's time to pass it on and let it play again. Please view all photos closely and ask any questions before bidding.
The banjo is sold as is with no returns. PAYPAL ONLY PLEASE. BUYER TO PAY FOR WELL PACKED SHIPPING AND INSURANCE. PAYMENT TO BE MADE WITHIN TWO DAYS OF CLOSE OF AUCTION. The pot of the banjo measures 10 1/2' across the back and aprox. 2 3/4' thick.
The neck measures 19 1/2' from the bottom of the fingerboard to the top of the head. The fingerboard has twenty frets. The case for the banjo was lost many years ago. I believe it to be a 1926 Model'The Gibson' Has beautiful inlay on fretboard and beautiful grained wood; not sure what kind of wood, but looks like rosewood. Made in Kalamazoo Michigan.Serial#8143-15.has a few scratches but in wonderful condition for its age.comes with, what I believe to be, the original case. It has not survived as well.a few tears in lining and scrapes on the outside, but has kept the prize inside very well. Banjo needs to be cleaned, but I believe this one is a treasure.so I will leave the cleaning to the new owner. It is 10 1/2' in diameter,30 1/2' overall and appears to be smaller in size than a regular banjo.Possibly a Tenor?
I can send more pictures on request. I'll try to answer your questions.although. I am not a banjo person. This banjo looks to be in better condition than any I have found in my research.
If you are a collector, I don't think you will be disappointed! Payment is expected within 3 days. Will consider any offer.Thank you and have a blessed day. Note: This 1929 Gibson Mastertone tenor banjo is featured on'earnestbanjo.com' under'Gibson Mastertone Banjos by year. It is called the'Irvin O. Kenen' banjo. He was my father, and he bought this banjo in 1929.
It is a single-owner banjo. The original case comes with it.
It has the expected amount of wear for its age. The serial number is found in chalk on the resonator and it is also stamped on the inside of the rim. It has a 40 hole tone ring. And it has an arch top. It produces a great, and loud, sound, which I find to be very sweet because my father, Irvin O. Kenen(1909-1995) played this banjo almost every day of his life, and I remember the sound. I recently had it changed from a'lefty' banjo to a'righty' because I thought I would play it, but I haven't.
Below are descriptions. From various banjo dealers from whom I requested information about this model. If you need more information, please call 908-625-2620(my cell number) No damage/repairs.
No repairs needed. Original tuning pegs. OHSC w/original key. Case in functioning condition with some peel of oil cloth covering.
20s Gibson case w/blue interior. Serial number: 9271-16 in chalk inside of resonator and in brown numbers inside of resonator and stamped inside of rim. This instrument features the Gibson Bella Voce fingerboard inlay pattern rather than the typical hearts and flowers pattern normally seen on the style 4. Author of“Spann’s Guide to Gibson 1902-1941” reports that he has encountered eight other examples from batch 9271 and all of them had Bella Voce fingerboards and chrome plated metal hardware. He suspects th ere were 25 banjos total in this group and that it is possible that Gibson was attempting to clear out discontinued stock using up the Bella Voce fingerboards. The armrest and tailpiece appear to be 1970s nickel plated Gibson replacements. In other respects it conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made with mahogany nec.
Hi, Below is the spec of the banjo that I got from the Earnest banjo web site. I am not a banjo expert and only have a limited knowledge but I will try answer any questions if possible. This is the exact banjo on the site. Seriel No#8107-17. I bought it approx 5-7 years back and got good use and enjoyment from it. My reason for selling is.
I do not play banjo anymore and the banjo is just sitting around. It has a beautiful sound and should be played. I have more photos if required but I cannot seem to upload them to eBay for some reason. If you would like to see the full spec on the banjo click on this link. Gibson described its new model in 1925 as'a distinguished Gibson model of beautiful flamed curly maple with triple gold-plated metal parts.
Satin finish, hand burnished. It has a slender, hand-shaped neck built with the Gibson patented. Truss-rod which prevents warping; 21 or 23-inch scale as requested. The fingerboard is of Brazilian rosewood, bound with white and black ivoroid and marquetry stripings and inlaid with original designs of white pearl to match the peg head design. It has laminated and arched flange resonator with marquetry inlays and bound with white and black ivoroid, and is equipped with gold plated(4 to 1) geared pegs, Kershner tailpiece and Gibson adjustable arm-rest; best quality Rogers white calf-skin head, pearl nut, maple bridge with ebony saddle and specially gauged strings.
This first-year example conforms to all the catalog specifications and is in fully original excellent condition. Both the'Mastertone' inlay on the peghead and the holes in the external skirt of the ball-bearing tone ring are unique to Mastertones produced in 1925. 8107-17(see) was owned and played for many years by Gene L. And Thanks for looking at my Auction I have here today a very nice little.Pre War.
1925 Gibson Tenor Banjo. That is in the condition that it was found in a closet. It has a few scrapes. And scratches, and a little rust on some of the metal parts, but you would have too if your were born in 1925.
Overall it's in very good condtion for it's age, and shouldn't take much work to bring it back to it's origianl condition, or put a Conversion Neck on it, and make a 5 String Banjo out of her. It will be shipped in it's original Case. Which is well used, but will help protect it in shipping. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

This is the real deal folks! A rare opportunity to own a really exceptional all original walnut 1932 Gibson RB-2 original five-string. Even comes with original pre-war Geib five-string hardshell case.
There was one just like this recently listed at Carter Vintage Guitars for $9.000.00 I got this banjo a while back from Gruhn's Guitars. Completely unmolested-didn't even have spikes in the freteboard(they have since been added at frets 7.8,9, and 10 for gigging ability) Original frets with very little play wear. It's all there, except for a replacement armrest and truss rod cover. It defies belief! Until I took her out of the case and played her, I figured I would be cutting the rim for a flathead ring-but the tone is truly. Very loud, powerful and expressive, it will knock down all comers, including my pre-war flathead, and many others I've played.
Very expressive range of tones. You can pull any tone in the world out of her. Up the neck is loud and sweet.
Apart from the armrest, all hardware is original and in very good condition. All nickel plated. Flange has typical amount of pull-up. Grover pancake tuners are original, although one has been replaced with another vintage grover pancake. Original is in the case. I hate to let her go.
But we are now expecting a baby, so I gotta do what I gotta do. Please email me with any questions. Thanks for looking! Very nice Pre-War Gibson Mastertone TB-Granada 4 string tenor banjo. It has been sitting for about a year, it is being sold'AS IS WITH NO RETURNS' The case is original and in ok shape, the lid for the interior compartment has come off, and it comes with wrench.

Appears unmolested with the exception of the added Elton armrest. Just about mint condition.
Appears unplayed for the most part, no fret wear. Straight neck. Other than armrest and one replaced resonator lug, the rest of the hardware is original. Serial number 9420-1 OR it could be 9420-17.
Either way, this was dated as per Joe Spann's Gibson book as a batch of 1929 GB-1 guitar banjos. The ODD thing about this instrument is the headstock logo which is very odd to see on this early of a banjo.
That being said, the neck is genuine Gibson and the finish and coloration matches the resonator and rim perfectly. It appears as if this instrument was 100% built at one time and finished at one time. I cannot explain the discrepancy in the later style logo on this instrument although a guess would be that the neck had a refret job at some time and the neck seems to suggest that. The Headstock could have been redone at that time but really.it all appears original to the neck. Nothing to me. Suggests that the neck was redone.
And I always say. The only thing consistent with Gibson is their inconsistency. This would make the perfect player as is for the Guitarist seeking a great vintage banjo sound or would make an excellent banjo for the bas.

PLEASE READ THIS DESCRIPTION AND ACTUALLY LOOK AT THE PICTURES BEFORE BUYING Well played with lots of vintage character. Kalamazoo 5 string banjo neck with attached vintage and original 5th string tuner. 5 strings necks from this era are very rare with tenors and plectrums being far more prevalent. The wood in these old necks is HARD and when set up on a banjo correctly this old wood really helps the banjo to crack harder.like spanking two pieces of hickory together. As seen in the pictures the neck is well played but still has life left in her.
A LOT of character on this one. From the'DAVID' in the back of the headstock to the lower lag bolt that has. Been replaced with one that goes all the way through the heel and a 5th string tuner held in place with some putty.the neck was attached to a well playing banjo when I got her. This neck should make an excellent old time banjo neck or the basis for an old wood conversion to a Mastertone style neck for the seasoned woodworker. Neck is in nearly perfect condition and shows little if no fret wear. It mates up to the banjo pot perfectly as well. Banjo features a Remo head. Sosbee banjo bridge and super high quality GOTOH banjo tuners which I believe are the best in the industry.
They have smooth tuning action and hold tune extremely well. This banjo is ALL ORIGINAL GIBSON WOOD and just recently set up and completed. These are my favorite conversions because they can be priced relatively inexpensive compared to a NEW banjo(a new Gibson was last priced at $3400) they have a better crack due to the old wood and the collectible value built into the prewar wood is something that won.

For auction is a VINTAGE GIBSON PB3 PRE-WAR MASTERTONE 4 STRING BANJO SEREIAL#8262-34 IN EXCELLENT READY-TO-PLAY CONDITION! This MASTERTONE banjo has the ball bearing arch-top type tone ring.
Produced in 1925. This was the last year for this tone ring.
In 1926, GIBSON introduced the solid bell-bronze type in both arch-top and flat-head configurations. This ball bearing type, though not as sought after as the later versions, is still very popular among both bluegrass, and jazz players alike. This banjo has a 4-string plectrum neck, but could be converted to a 5-string banjo which has been done to many banjos of this type. I've been a 5-string player since 1968, so what I would do with this is remove and retain the resonator and original 4-string neck, and replace them with a new 5-string neck and resonator, to make this an outstanding.
Instrument for bluegrass music. Either way, I think a person would want to do something with the neck and resonator, due to the condition of the finish on both. The headstock overlay looks fine with the expected GIBSON finish checking, and the inside of the 3-ply wood rim has no problems. However, the back of the neck and resonator have finish in poor condition. There is also a spot of finish deterioration on the bottom edge of the rim. I don't know what might have caused this type of deterioration, but it looks to be only finish deep.
The photos show this in detail. The neck and resonator are made of maple, and the fingerboard is rosewood with mother-of-pearl inlays and white binding. It has the Grover'PRESTO' tailpiece standard on these banjos. The original geared tuning pegs are also by Grover. The tuner buttons are grained celluloid, or(ivoroid) The Fiber-skyn 2 head looks very old and stained, and I think it was mounted on a 5-string banjo and then mounted on this 4-string, because the wear patterns near the bridge are indicative of 5-string use. The metal parts of the'pot' are nickel plated brass, as are the tuners.
There is some normal wear from use. 1929 Gibson Mastertone TB-3 Very good+ condition- original finish. Replaced tension hoop, new(ish) medium crown Remo Wagonwheel head.

Gibson Mastertone Guarantee label fully intact. Matching FON is stamped inside rim, and also painted and chalked inside the resonator. Will come shipped in the original(well used) hard case. #M4397-2, with period hard shell case. The tenor banjo played an extremely important part inthe jazz band – both in Dixieland and popular bands as well (Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, PaulWhiteman, etc.). Tenor banjo building among mainstream and secondary builderswas established and proliferated. The big five brands of tenor banjos were:Gibson, pre-WW2 Epiphone, Bacon & Day, Paramount and Vega. Gibson began buildingtenor banjos in September of 1918 with their “TB” model, for “Tenor Banjo.” Bythe mid-1920s (specifically 1925) banjos became far more sophisticated, withheavier “pots” (the pot on a banjo is everything below the neck), manycontaining tone rings (which is a heavy ring of brass alloy, nickel orgold-plated, that resides between the skin and the walls of the rim. Gibsonmade, in total, 20 different prewar models.
While most of their banjos were thetone-ring equipped models, they also needed a model that was affordable to a lotmore players, especially non-professionals that we refer to as “talentedamateurs.” For this purpose the TB-2 emerged. This style has many similarities to a Gibson Mastertone, but differs in the following ways. A) The model is bestowed only threethumbscrews to hold flange to resonator – instead of 4; b)it has but a singlelong coordinator rod through the back and a stump – instead of 2 full-lengthcoordinator rods. C) its oval yellow and black label reads “The Gibson, GibsonInc., Kalamazoo, Mich” and not “Gibson Mastertone.” d) itdoes not have the substantial nickel-plated (or on some models gold-plated)brass tone ring between the skin and the walls of the rim. Instead it had a“rolled bead” or thinner, unplated, brass ring. Some of the similaritiesinclude that the resonator, which has the serial number in enamel near the neckopening and also in chalk at the center, is virtually identical to that of aTB-3 Mastertone – maple laminated with binding on top and back sides; thisparticular model has the fiddle-cut headstock and the mother of pearl “multiplediamonds” fingerboard inlay pattern of a TB-3.
In fact this is a bit of ananomaly since the “late 1929” TB-2 is said to have had a walnut resonator andthis is maple, the model sometimes came with a one-piece flange but this has atube-and-plate, this model is said to have pearloid fingerboard markers andthese are mother of pearl, and then there’s that “M” prefix on the serial numberwhich is Most unusual. This banjo shows far less signs of wear than most, somehad wear behind the neck, and very light signs of use on the rest. It’spossible that this could have been a custom order banjo – ordered with thesetraditional TB-3 inlays. The fiddle cut headstock was a listed feature in1929-1933. Another interesting thing about this example, and certainly this isa benefit to the player, is that it’s lighter in weight. With the rolled brasstone ring (which appears from the front to be a flathead) instead of theMastertone ring, it weighs 8 pounds, 1.4 oz.
For our numerologically curiouscustomers, a 1925 ball bearing TB-3 weighs 9 lbs., 5.8 oz, and we have two 1927archtop TB-3 banjos weighing in at 10 lbs, 3.4 oz and 10 lbs,.6 of an oz. OurTB-2 still has its original skin head which remains in fine condition displayingsome classy skin oils.
